Ray Mears Wild Food, currently airing on BBC television is a different kind of food show.
The trailer for the programme shows the unconventional presenter trekking through the woods with a shopping trolley - pride of place goes to a large woodland mushroom that he picks.
On the January 10th programme Ray was using fungi to light his fire (not in the bio-luminescent sense) in the manner of our Palaeolithic ancestors.
He utilised some Horseshoe fungus to get the fire going with a spark from a flint and then a different variety of fungus to sustain the flames.
Multi-functional these fabulous funguses.
An interesting programme for foodies and the intrepid outdoor types, who might want to employ some Mears techniques while out on forays or camping.
Stalker would prefer to stick with the fresh produce from the local store and if needs be a box of matches to light the fire. Surely that's what progress is all about?
