This is from a blog, a bit of an oddity maybe, but somehow reassuring that mushroom growing is an endeavour that traverses the generations.
"Keep Your Shelter - Mushroom Growing for Profit! I am still rifling through some of these old newspapers I have and turning my attention to the war time advertisements I have come up with a few gems. Firstly there is this advertisement from the Sunday Express May 6th 1945 that runs with an ad from the British Mushroom Industry Ltd based in Covent Garden, London. They tell the public to hang onto their air-raid shelters: 'Keep Your Shelter Ideal for mushroom Grow them in your cellar, greenhouse, shed or open garden, all year round. Our New Compost Method Requires No Manure. We show you how and buy your crops - any quantity at a guaranteed price. Start now, area 10ft x 10ft yields up to 200Ibs. Send 2d for "Mushroom Growing for Profit.'"
Stalker reckons the bit "any quantity at a guaranteed price" would make growers roll their eyes today! Wouldn't we all like to have a look at that growing for profit pamphlet...?
