With fuel costs rising, packaging costs on the up, and other raw materials going up too, e.g. straw, it’s no wonder that growers are set to experience higher costs for their compost this year.
The fuel price increases affect everything the most, and the knock –on effect is felt throughout the economy, the mushroom industry is not immune to the fall-out.
One consideration might bring a glimmer of hope though to the Irish grower – with fuel costs so high, importation of fresh produce from afar becomes less attractive.
The hidden danger in out-sourcing the fresh produce industry to more eastern concerns might just convince some marketing people that securing Irish fresh produce is the best way to keep costs down in the long run.
