With the rationalisation that has occurred (and is still ongoing) in the compost end of the industry, the demand for straw has become a worriment to some farmers.
However, Stalker heard recently of a Dublin farmer worried about his 3,000 bales of straw, no longer having the same offers from the mushroom industry.
He needn't have worried, they were snapped up by one of the big players in the industry.
There may well be a scarcity of straw for compost this year, which will inevitably push at compost prices.
Any growers expecting compost prices to come down are not reading the runes correctly.
