MIANI has been informed by Works Permits UK that the Sector Based Scheme for mushroom workers from outside the EU has been reprieved for another year.
MIANI met Home Office officials in May and were informed the scheme would end because of EU enlargement and the pool of workers available within the EU.
However many growers have found the SBS workers more reliable so MIANI put forward a case to the Home Office for continuation of a quota scheme and this has now been successful.
The SBS will continue till May 2006 and mushroom workers are included.
