Gypsum, that essential ingredient for balancing compost PH levels, managed to be a source of irritation to compost yards over the festive season.
It wasn't the gypsum itself of course, but the supply of it from the single source in Ireland, Irish Gypsum Kingscourt.
The company forgot to let composters know that they would be carrying out maintenance over the holiday period at the plant and that processing of this supposedly waste product would cease for a while.
This little oversight caught many of the compost yards of guard and managed to cause quite a bit of unnecessary complication to them.
Composters pay around €1800 a load for the stuff - on the continent it appears composters in Holland and Germany are able to get gypsum as a waste product and do not have the same cost hurdle as Irish yards.
The composters were unnecessarily put in a tight spot then during the holiday period – Stalker wonders was there any customer relations initiative after the event by Irish Gypsum?
