Growers need to be vigilant when it comes to rats and mice in the farm area. Mice especially are renowned for spreading green mould. At this time of the year the wee blighters are often spotted in mushroom houses – doing what comes naturally to them, but causing headaches for growers. The judicious use of furry quadrupeds, of the genus Felis catus, is a normal response in order to keep down numbers of mammals from the order rodentia. But it can lead to a Catch-22 situation, with the mischievous moggie also getting into houses and being itself a disease vector.
