The manufacture of compost at the McGeary Compost site on the Armagh road is reportedly to end before Christmas this year.
The McGeary Fresh Mushrooms premises have been bought out by the neighbouring T-MET waste metal recycling company in advance of a major expansion of that yard.
Staff at McGeary's were informed of their redundancy on Friday morning, the 19th of November. The news has stunned many within the company, although rumours of the company's precarious state had been circulating for many months.
The company letter that was sent out earlier this autumn to growers stated; " We are all aware that the structure of our business is changing." And so it has come to pass that the business seems to have mutated into a dead end.
Stalker would like to believe that the company's stated position that it would not be found wanting in its generosity would extend to the pre-Christmas redundancy packages for the out-going staff who have been faithful in their service of the compost company. It's one sure way of avoiding that dreaded affliction of negative retrospection.
The process of rationalisation that the company mentioned in their letter to growers has truly come to fruition.
