Stalker was interested to see the latest produce promoting television advert by Tesco. It showed actor Timothy Spall surveying a range of misshapen mushrooms – the punchline of the advert was that the misshapes don't matter as the 'shrooms were going into a pie. The grading system for the Tesco fresh mushroom supplies might make growers weep, hey but don't worry Tesco profits are through he roof again this year.
The company demonstrated its position the UK's biggest supermarket chain when it posted interim profit results of 24%, with its fastest sales growth in almost 10 years too, on Tuesday 21st of September.
Financial experts in the City of London now fully expect Tesco to break the £2bn profit barrier by the end of this financial year.
Makes the mind boggle when one sees figures like that.
Tesco finance director Andrew Higginson said; " When we have a successful period like this we try to be paranoid… our's is an intensely competitive market." Tesco aims to cut its costs by £270m this year – through efficiency improvements according to them. Maybe it's time for farmers to get more paranoid, as Mr Higginson maintained that the group, which is the biggest customer of UK Farmers, was not doing this at the expense of its suppliers.
Hmmmm – Stalker would reckon that if that is the case it is because they have already stripped suppliers to the bone. As the slogan goes – Every Little Helps.
