More than 450 drivers in Northern Ireland have so far been fined for using their mobile phones illegally.
The law changed in February but £30 fines only began to be handed out from March. A police spokeswoman said the law would continue to be enforced rigorously.
At present, no penalty points accompany the fines but the government has signalled its intention to toughen the legislation. Anyone looking to chat and drive would be wise to invest in the hands free kit – although experts maintain that hands free significantly increases the risk of an accident occurring too.
