MOST COMMENTED UPON ARTICLE -Ukrainian Mushroom Market
Ukraine is situated in east central Europe. It is bordered by Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova to the west, by Belarus to the north and by the Russian Federation to the northeast and east. To the south lie the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The capital of Ukraine is Kiev. The population is 48million.
The climate in Ukraine is temperate, with the Black Sea coastal region experiencing milder winters. In Kiev, temperatures range from about 21 degrees F in January to about 69 degrees F in July. Annual precipitation averages 24.2 inches/615 millimetres in Kiev. Droughts are not infrequent in southern areas. Geographical location and climatic conditions are very suitable for agriculture.
According to research by independent experts, the approximate volume of cultured mushrooms produced in Ukraine in 2001 was between 1.5 – 2 thousands tonnes. There were only 50 grams of mushrooms per each resident of Ukraine in 2001 taking into consideration fresh, dry & frozen mushrooms imported to Ukraine from abroad.
In the early eighties the building of a mushroom complex (farm) was launched in “Pushche Voditsa” (Located near the capital of Ukraine,Kiev - the population of Kiev is amount to 3 million). The annual production of mushrooms in 1997 was 400 thousands tons. Now it produces 1.5 – 2 tons of mushrooms per 1day. This farm is the main producer of mushrooms for Kiev markets. The main part of production goes on sale to shops, supermarkets and restaurants.
The price of mushrooms in supermarkets is near 2 euro per kilogram.
The development of the Ukrainian mushroom industry in the nineties was slowed by the import of Polish fresh and frozen mushrooms. Polish production was cheaper and corresponded to standard requirements what we couldn’t say about Ukrainian production. At that period Ukrainian producers couldn’t compete with Polish ones.
The situation changed after the implementation of a government regulation on the import of agricultural produce; following this regulation there were agreed import duty ( amounting to 30 %) on fresh and frozen mushrooms. In such conditions the Polish mushrooms were economically unprofitable and the volume of fresh & frozen mushrooms was decreased.
Now two kinds of mushrooms are cultivated in Ukraine such as veshenka ordinary (oyster - pleurotus ostreatus) and champignon. All farms connected with mushroom industry are divided into mushroom producers, compost producers and spawn producers. In the past compost producing farms were compost and mushroom producing farms at the same time. Some of the farms work in this way still , but most of the farms are highly specialised.
There are a lot of farms producing substrate mycelium in plastic sacks (substrate is a compost for veshenka ordinary). Cultivating of veshenka ordinary is profitable and free of troubles because they are simpler than champignon to grow. They can be cultivated without any specialised equipment - that’s why veshenka ordinary is interesting for non-mushroom producing farms. Also substrate can be made by non-specialists - the price per one sack ( 15 Kg.) is 1.5 euro, which gives 3Kg of veshenka ordinary priced at 1.5 - 1.6 euro per 1 Kg.
Ukraine is in a good position to be one of the most important mushroom importer to Europe because of its geographical proximity to main the mushroom importers. Also the government adopts preferential rates for farmers growing mushrooms (tax free 20 %). There are a lot of places suitable for cultivating champignons in farming. Mushroom operative’ salary is 150 euro per month.
Also Ukraine has all the workers needed for producing compost. One ton of Ukrainian champignon compost costs 100-120 euro. Future mushroom producers have a large, free and unsaturated domestic market, they also have an export capacity to neighbouring European countries.

1/28/2010 7:37:38 AM Dr. Muhammad Asif Ali Associate Professor of Horticulture is involved in teaching and Research since 1978. In his research leading to the degree of M.S., he has have evaluated different locally available agricultural and industrial waste materials for the cultivation of straw mushroom (Volvariella volvacea). In the studies leading to the degree of Ph.D. at University of Sheffield, UK, he conducted research on the physiology of growth and morphogenesis in the in the thermotolerant strains of Agaricus bitorquis and related species. He assembled collection of strains of differing temperature requirements and examined their temperature and growth response on agar and solidstate fermentation on compost. The latter has involved the development of suitable culture systems. He has also investigated relationship of CO2 released and production of fruiting initials in bottle cultures. He has also determined the lipid composition and fatty acid profile of Agaricus bitorquis and related species, particularly in relation to temperature tolerance. In his position as Research Officer, he has completed one Research Project entitled “Research Studies on Wild and Exotic Mushrooms In Pakistan” which was jointly supported by United States Department Of Agriculture and Pakistan Agricultural Research Council, Islamabad. In this project, a number of wild mushroom species were collected and identified. He has also conducted research on cultivation, substrate evaluation and selection of straw mushroom (Volvariella volvacea), oyster mushroom (Pleurotus species) and button mushroom (Agaricus species). In his position first as Lecturer and then as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor, his duties included teaching and research at undergraduate and postgraduate level. He has also chaired the thesis committee for several M.Sc. and Ph.D. students on mushroom culture. He has also introduced a new course “Mushroom Biology and Technology” for postgraduate students. This course is mainly focused on the basic and advance information of the cultural techniques of different mushrooms. He has also been involved in conducting training programs for amateurs and enthusiastic growers by giving talks and lectures. He has also written many articles for magazines and professional journals. He is also managing a Mushroom Culture Laboratory in the Institute of Horticultural Sciences, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan. The interest of this laboratory centers around macro-fungi, in particular the edible and cultivated mushrooms. Not only this laboratory is concerned with germplasm preservation, strains and substrate improvement of different cultivated mushrooms, it is also concerned with the technology transfer and training.

On the other hand button mushroom has good market potential in Pakistan. We have established a mushroom lab in the Institute of Horticultural Sciences, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Not only this lab is concerned with germplasm preservation, strain and substrate improvement of cultivated mushrooms. It is also concerned with the technology transfer and training. We usually give advice on the following special aspects.
Advise on building and environmental control
Crop advice, both on site and by telephone
Up-to-date recommendations for pests and disease problems
Help in many other areas relevant to mushroom production
Mushrooms cultivation also requires different production systems. Some requires high investments, other less, but you must exceed a break even yield to be profitable.
The most important factor is the supply of pure culture spawn (seed), which is now available from us. This spawn is cheaper than imported spawn, and give equally good results as compared to imported spawn.
