DISOLITE & OMNICIDE-M Proven by the H.D.C, as one of the most effective disinfectants for killing "Trichoderma Aggressivum"
Independent tests carried out by Dr. Ralph Noble @East Malling Research in April 2012 - March 31st 2013
Please refer to HDC Project 057, which is a must read for all Irish Mushroom Growers. You can read the report online at the HDC website at the web address below.
The report "M057" ,is headed "Mushrooms: Influence of ammonia during compost pasteurisation and disinfectants on eradication of "Trichoderma aggressivum (Th2)"
Essentially the report or test work was undertaken because it identified the huge cost to the UK and Irish Mushroom industry ,that the Green Mould /trichoderma aggressivum (Th2) ,was actually causing .Thus with improved pasteurisation ,detection methodology, and by using "appropriate disinfectants"- this figure or loss could be substantially reduced. Especially as it was known that Th2 was capable of causing severe or even COMPLETE 100% mushroom crop loss when present in compost at certain levels. The report is very comprehensive and should be read by all growers, who should then be able to appreciate the great necessity of using the correct form of disinfectant that can genuinely prevent this most active pathogen from decimating their crops and costing them so much.
Action points for growers and what this report clearly states.
1....Disolite”was the “most effective disinfectant in killing Trichoderma Aggressivum spores”.
2....Omnicide -M "was the most effective ‘non-phenolic’ disinfectant”.
The report also includes test results with the other widely used and permitted, tested disinfectants, but overall emphasised that phenolic disinfectants had greater efficacy on Trichoderma spores and produced the greatest reduction and even residual activity. E.g. in the tests it states that "After 17 hours exposure, the vapour from Disolite at 1: 250 dilution, killed all the Trichoderma spores. In comparison with which it states that the spores were also killed using the well respected Phenolic competitor disinfectant "Prophyl", but at a dilution of 1:100, which makes it appear somewhat uncompetitive if you have to use 2 1/2(two and a half ) times as much to get the same result ! The discontinued product "Environ” also gave good results in the phenolic category but as stated is no longer manufactured. Using a disinfectant which has been tested on mushrooms is highly recommended for peace of mind and expected when being audited.
. So what does the grower have to do? How can you prevent an out- break of trichoderma aggressivum (th2)?
Our recommended answer is to use "Disolite" or "Omnicide-M". And you will get the best results and disease free conditions, giving your mushrooms the best chance to grow.
Growers are reminded however , that although these disinfectants are proven to be the most effective in counteracting diseases, and can be used for every aspect of hygiene, i.e. foot dips ,shelving , floors , walls , tunnel linings , picking equipment etc, they should not be used where they may come into contact with the crop or substrates, As Phenolic disinfectants of all types are sometimes detectable at very low levels, and stringent washing down isessential.
