What follows is a transcript of an Australian Broadcasting Corporation feature report on the mushroom industry down under, featuring Doug Schiripa of Adelaide Mushrooms, who has been to Ireland a number of times and Patrick Newenham, originally from Co Cork and grew up on Rathcooney Mushroom farm in Glanmire. No doubt Irish growers will find the themes and issues explored to be of interest. PRESENTER: And now to an industry which has literally mushroomed over the last four decades.. While the number of growers may have fallen, mushroom production in Australia has increased tenfold as the industry adopts new techniques and technology. And as Kerry Staight reports, one South Australian producer has taken things to a whole new level.
