Stalker was intrigued by the obituaries for the renowned scientist Albert Hofmann who died on April 29.for those who do not know the name, Hofmann was the man who discovered the mind altering drug LSD back in the 1940s. What intrigued Stalker was the fact that Hoffman had been involved in research on different funguses when he stumbled upon the elixir of the counter culture that blossomed in the 1960s. His initial field of study was on the substance called chitin, which is the main constituent of mushrooms and of course the structural material in insects.
Hofmann was born into a working-class family in Baden, a spa town in northern Switzerland, and as a child experienced memorable, revelatory encounters with nature. He entered the University of Zurich and graduated in chemistry, joining Sandoz in 1929 because it sponsored research into natural phenomena.
